Topic 1: Organometal halide perovskite materials and devices
Organometal halide perovskite (Pero) materials have exceptional electronic and optical properties, for a new generation of large area, high performance optoelectronic devices. While all reported Pero devices contained a multi-layer device architecture, we reported for the first time single-layer Pero LEDs using a composite thin film of Pero and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO).
Mixing PEO with Pero improves the film continuity and smoothness as shown in the SEM images of Pero only, and Pero/PEO composite thin films with PEO/Pero ratio of 0.25:1, 0.5:1, and 0.75:1. A fully continuous thin film can be obtained which is critical for the success of electronic device fabrication.
Single-layer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using the composite thin film sandwiched between indium tin oxide and indium-gallium eutectic alloy exhibit a low turn-on voltage and high brightness
Topic 2: Stretchable, active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays
Large external displays can now connect to laptop and notepad computers for daily office work. However, carrying a large display for travel is not practical giving the large size and heavy weight of current external displays. An ideal solution is to develop new displays that are light weight and stretchable. They can be folded like handkerchiefs into small sizes for easy portability and unfolded into large screens to plug into all other small size portable electronics including cell phones and smart watches, etc.
In collaboration with Dr. Chuan Wang at Michigan State University, we are investigating the fundamental material structure-property relationships essential for stretchable thin-film transistors and the integration of stretchable OLEDs and stretchable thin-film transistors. This project is currently funded by National Science Foundation of USA.
