242 - Characterization Lab 1

Laser Cutter

Cut through substrates such as heat-resistant glass, some plastics/polymers, nylon, papers, some rubber, silicone, etc. Works with a CO2 laser that emits in the infrared spectrum to cut or etch patterns by vaporizing the substrate. Applications may involve precision-cut rubilith masks, micromachining plexiglass, microfluidic channels in polymers, direct cutting or etching of PDMS. Resulting in plexiglass containers, ports, or microfluidics, among others

Gaussmeter

Measure the direction and the intensity of small magnetic fields. Thus, determining the natural magnetism of various steel products, intensity, N/S polarity of magnets, etc. Furthermore, determine whether any static or dynamic electromagnetic fields are affecting the working of precise electronic devices at their installation location.

Syringe Pump

Fill up syringes. Accepts 1 syringe from the smallest size available up to 60 mL. A 140 mL syringe can be filled up to 120mL. Applications of syringes in research laboratories may involve measuring and transferring solvents and reagents and the use of the needle tip to add liquids to very confined spaces, among other uses
